Vision for 2009/2010 and beyond.

At our Annual General Meeting in October 2009 the Eldership presented a three-fold vision to the church for the coming year.
Entitled  "Empowering the Congregation" it covered "Empowering for Outreach", "Empowering for Pastoral Care", and
  "Empowering by Connecting".

Empowering the Congregation

One of the great strengths of our church is the people, each a gift from God to the Church (Eph 4:11,12). Looking over the recent past, many innovations have come from the congregation at large rather than just the leadership.  This is simply because there are more people in the congregation and so more opportunities to hear God's voice.  Peter reminded the crowd in Acts 2:17-18 that the Spirit speaks to everyone and we believe that it is through everyone that we should expect God to speak to us as a church. The role of the leadership is to provide an environment where the Spirit may be heard (John 16:13), where the Spirit can be tested (1 John 4:1-3), and where the Spirit can be followed (Gal 5:25).

Empowering for Outreach

In the great commission (Matt 28:18-20), Jesus encourages outreach and we see that there is a real desire in the church to be more engaged in outreach.   All that appears to be lacking is the ability to find, create, recognise or seize the opportunities that God wants us to have (Luke 10:11-12, 1 Peter 3:15).
In looking to appoint a new minister we are particularly looking for someone with significant experience in using God given opportunities for outreach so they can guide us to being more alert and more responsive to such opportunities as God provides us. However, independently of finding a new minister, if you feel that God is pointing out an opportunity to you, do not hesitate to speak to any elder about pursuing that opportunity.

Empowering for Pastoral Care

The Great Commandment (Matt 22:37:40) to love God requires not just an attitude but positive action, such as worship, prayer, and obedience.  The second, to love your neighbour as yourself, equally requires affirmative action.  God can more easily help us to see and to respond to the needs of others when we take steps to open our lives to others and open our selves to the lives of others.
We believe that these acts of Pastoral care are not the sole role of an appointed Pastor, but can be carried out in various ways by various members of the congregation (1 Thes 5:11).  We hope to create and encourage opportunities for deeper levels of openness.
If you feel that God is calling you to connect more with those around you, whether within or without the church, please speak to any elder about pursuing that calling.

Empowering by connecting

Our church is blessed with many people willing and able to take leadership positions in a variety of different roles, whether leading a bible study group, leading in one of the  many ministry areas in the church, or serving on the Board as Elder or Deacon.  Each of these people has a privileged opportunity to see God at work in others and so to be more in tune with how God is speaking to the church.  But equally, each of these people can expect to be a target in a spiritual battle as the enemy attempts to sabotage the work of God (Eph 6:12). We believe that each of these circumstances make it important for leaders to remain connected as a group (Rom 15:7, Gal 6:2), that blessings may be shared and doubled, while burdens may be shared and halved.  We aim to create situations that encourage leaders to be fully open with each other so as to benefit from the strengths of community.
If you are a leader and see a particular need or a particular opportunity please discuss that with one of the elders today.
